Color-Changing Condoms Detect Disease

Color-Changing Condoms Detect Disease
Jun-28-15
Three youths have won a national competition with their S.T.EYE condom, which will change color to signal the presence of a sexual disease.

Created by three 13- and 14-year-old students, the condom is impregnated with antibodies that will detect an STD virus or bacteria and will trigger the condom to change color. The reaction time will vary depending upon the disease, and the condom could also be equipped with a layer able to recognize other afflictions such as herpes and chlamydia.

The youths hope that the condom, which is still in the prototype stage, will help slow the spread of STDs by alerting the individual to possible infection without requiring a visit to the clinic—which many people are embarrassed to do.
