Comfortably Numb Alleviates Needle Fear

Comfortably Numb Alleviates Needle Fear
Apr-19-15
Designed with an eye toward children and the elderly, the 3D-printed Comfortably Numb reduces the pain of injections more effectively than current methods.

The Comfortably Numb device was created by a freshmen team from Rice University to numb the skin prior to an injection. The 3D-printed prototype is equipped with a pair of sealed chambers containing ammonium nitrate and water. When the device is twisted, the channels align and allow the chemicals to flow together, cooling the metal surface of the device. This cold surface is then touched to the site of the injection to numb the skin in a matter of seconds.
