How do you stop a cold? Scientific research finally suggests an answer – pure copper. Scientists have shown copper kills cold and flu viruses almost instantly just by touch, because copper is inherently antimicrobial.

The research led to a discovery – you can stop a cold just by rubbing smooth copper in your nose for 60 seconds at the first sign of a cold, according to anecdotal evidence.

This discovery led to a practical instrument designed to touch and kill cold viruses in your nose and on your hands. It is also designed to kill flu viruses, MRSA, and many other disease.

It’s called CopperZap, because copper zaps germs.

If the handles of shopping trolleys were copper coated, could this prevent the transferring of viruses?

Yes, Jane! Great question! In fact I read that some Walmarts have already equipped their carts with copper handles. Here 's a link to the article in a Korean paper. http://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/news/biz/2013/06/373_137539.html

Over the last few years, people are becoming more aware of all the wonderful applications for copper as an antimicrobial agent. Any public surfaces that are touched by many hands would be a good place for copper. (our version goes with you in your pocket so you can rub it before and after touching grimy things. )

Yes, Jane - copper would certainly cut down on the transfer of viruses and bacteria from person to person via the shopping cart handle. Copper starts killing germs in under a minute. The possibility is still there for cross-contamination if you touch the handle immediately after someone else, but if it has been sitting there a while, it will be germ-free within a short period.
A Korean company stated that Walmart in the US was already doing this, though I haven't seen that information elsewhere, or seen it at Walmart. Maybe they are testing it at select stores.

I make pens on my wood lathe and after reading about copper being used to swab the nostrils to kill germs, I substituted a copper welding tip for the pen writing tip. The next time my nose started to get stuffed up, I swabbed my nostrils with my copper-tipped pen. Within minutes my nose cleared up. I then made a wooden handle, like a pen and put a threaded brass insert in one end to accept the welding tip. This can be removed for cleaning or replaced. I keep a "schnozz pen" on my night stand and if I get stuffed up at night, I just swab my nostrils and within minutes my nose is clear. I've given them to others and they swear by the way the copper clears their nose. I'm convinced copper fights germs.
