Creating Fuel from Food Waste

Creating Fuel from Food Waste

(8)Feb-11-12
Researchers have developed a plant that uses fruit and vegetable waste to create methane, which can then be used as a fuel for vehicles.

The pilot plant, developed by a team at Fraunhofer, is built next to a large wholesale market, which will supply the food waste. The plant will use different microorganisms to digest the food waste and produce the methane, which is then compressed into cylinders and used as fuel. Because food waste contains a lot of water, it will ferment fairly quickly, creating the biogas in just a few days.
