Creating Stronger Steel with Nanolamination

Creating Stronger Steel with Nanolamination
Feb-19-15
Using a special form of electroplating, the startup Modumetal has developed a type of steel that is ten times stronger than normal.

The process, currently being commercialized, involves controlling the metal at the nanoscale level in order to give the metal new properties. While this technology has been in use for some time, it is both difficult and expensive when applied to large pieces of metal.

In response, Modumetal has developed a form of electroplating that uses electrical currents to create a layered structure, allowing the team to carefully control the composition of the nanostructured layers. The process can be applied to large pieces of material, and it costs the same as conventional metal treatments.
