CricSpike Opens Airways in the Field

CricSpike Opens Airways in the Field
Jul-30-16
The innovative CricSpike could help save lives by making it easier open an airway in the field.

The device, created by a team of undergrads at Johns Hopkins, was developed with an eye for use on the battlefield. The simple, inexpensive device is meant to make performing a cricothyrotomy more effective, and is equipped with a tip that will extend only far enough to reach into the windpipe. The CricSpike system packs into a kit that includes a scalpel, endotracheal tube and bag valve mask that can be squeezed to force air into the patient’s lungs.

The CricSpike is still in the rough prototype phase, but the team hopes to improve on the design and eventually offer it to the market.
