Cuttable, Multi-Touch Sensor

Cuttable, Multi-Touch Sensor
Oct-12-13
By developing a new way of laying out circuits, researchers have created a mulit-touch sensor that can be cut like paper and still remain responsive.

Instead of the typical grid arrangement of electrodes, the team looked to nature for inspiration for more robust designs, and settled on two styles. The star-shape arrangement places the controller at the center of the sheet and connects it to each electrode separately, while the tree topology arrangement gathers the wires a bit like a tree trunk and runs them vertically up the middle of the paper, where they then branch off to the individual electrodes. The electrodes were printed using conductive ink, and each design has its own advantages depending upon how it is being used.
