The Cytosponge “pill on a string” could help physicians detect the early signs of cancer by allowing for more precise—and non-invasive—biopsies.
Developed by a team from the University of Cambridge to help detect esophageal cancer, the Cytosponge is made up of a tightly compressed sponge attached to a string and contained within a pill. When the pill is swallowed, the exterior casing dissolves, releasing the sponge and allowing it to expand. Once the sponge has expanded fully, it is gently tugged back up through the esophagus, where it gathers samples along the way.
