DETECT Test Identifies Superbugs

DETECT Test Identifies Superbugs
Oct-17-18
The new DETECT test is able to identify antibiotic-resistant bacteria in minutes, helping stop the spread of the dangerous superbugs.

Developed by a team from UC Berkeley, the DETECT test relies on detecting the beta-lactamases enzymes in urine samples, which are produced by resistant bacteria when exposed to an antibiotic. In contrast to similar tests, the Berkeley DETECT test amplifies the signal of the enzyme to by a factor of 40,000, allowing it to be detected in a urine sample in just minutes.
