Researchers have created a diamond nanothread that could be used to lift a space elevator from the Earth to the Moon.
The diamond nanothread was originally developed by a team from Penn State University by applying alternating cycles of pressure to isolated, liquid-state benzene molecules. The result was a thread 20,000 times small than a human hair, but incredibly strong.
Following up on the Penn State research, a team from Queensland University took the technology a step further by using large-scale molecular dynamics to model the nanothread, discovering that the material is much versatile than previously believed, and could have far-reaching applications—perhaps as far as the edge of space.
