The winners of Stanford's challenge to create products to improve the lives of the elderly have been announced, and a dishware set designed for people with Alzheimer's has taken the grand prize.

This year's challenge from the Stanford Center on Longevity called for designers to create products "that will keep individuals with cognitive impairment independent for as long as possible." Sha Yao, from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, won the grand prize with her EatWell dining utensil set created for people with Alzheimer's. The set features bright blue bowls with slanted bottoms, which provides a visual contrast with the food and helps the food gather together. The cups have heavy bottoms to prevent spills and the utensils are equipped with a special grip-friendly handle.
