Disney Touchscreen Simulates Texture

Disney Touchscreen Simulates Texture
Oct-09-13
Using electricity, Disney engineers have developed a way to a give flat surfaces the sensation of different textures.

Called “tactile rendering of 3D features,” the process is based on the knowledge that small, electronic pulses can stretch the skin on a finger and fool the brain into feeling a physical texture.

Although scientists have known for some time that friction is the predominant force in perceiving texture, Disney’s developments could have wide ranging applications in devices already in use. Future applications could even include feeling the texture of a fabric or object through a smartphone before making the purchase.
