Researchers have developed an autonomous coordinated docking technology that could increase the applications of UAVs by allowing them to pair with a moving ground vehicle.
The technology was developed by a group from the WAVE Lab at the University of Waterloo using an Aeryon Scout UAV and a skid-steer UGV made by Clearpath Robotics. As the two units approach the designated meeting point, they each transmit their current position to a controller at a decentralized location. The controller responds by compensating for the nonlinearities in the vehicles' motions and remains stable even during time delays of several seconds—which allows unreliable Wi-Fi to be used to coordinate the landing.
