DOL-Fin Lets You Swim Like a Dolphin

DOL-Fin Lets You Swim Like a Dolphin
Jul-17-14
The DOL-Fin promises to let users swim like a dolphin by replacing the usual pair of fins with a single, rigid fin that provides hydrofoil propulsion.

Developed by Smith Aerospace, the DOL-Fin (Dynamic Oscillating Lateral Fin) features a wide, stiff fin that delivers hydrofoil propulsion. Although this design has been used before, the DOL-Fin differs in that it does not attach directly and firmly to the feet. Instead, it is held in place by a suspension frame that allows the fin to move in the same way as a dolphin's fluke. This ability to pitch up and down helps to increase efficiency while also preventing the fin from 'stalling out,' and the fin's wide, hydrofoil design is more hydrodynamic.
