By installing sensors in a car seat, a team of researchers hope to prevent some of the accidents caused by drivers falling asleep at the wheel.
The system is an improvement on a previous version, which sees the cardiac-monitor devices installed on existing car seats. Instead, the sensors are built directly into the textile used to cover the seat, where the system will monitor the driver's heart rate and trigger an alert if the driver falls asleep. If the driver chooses to ignore the alert, self-driving technology could step in to guide the car safely off the road.
