The Dutch Windwheel concept would combine a nearly silent wind turbine with affordable and energy-efficient housing, allowing people to live comfortably within the ring-shaped structure.
Unlike conventional wind turbines, the Dutch Windwheel eschews blades in favor of a dual-ringed structure. The turbine—called an electrostatic wind energy converter—is located in the inner ring of the building, where it uses a network of steel tubes to convert the energy to electricity. The system requires no moving parts, which makes it silent and virtually maintenance-free.
As well as generating energy, the Dutch Windwheel would also provide housing space, hotel rooms, a commercial shopping district and a restaurant.
