E-Paper Traffic Signs Reflect Changing Traffic Needs

E-Paper Traffic Signs Reflect Changing Traffic Needs

The solar-powered, e-ink traffic signs from Visionect can be updated instantly as the regulations change, saving cities thousands of dollars with also providing better information.

Making their debut on the streets of Sydney, the signs communicate with a central server via 3G, which enables city officials to update the signs’ information as required. A software program will trigger the signs to “wake up” at a specific time, allowing the displayed information to be changed to suit the different needs of the traffic. Outside of that ‘awake’ time, the signs consume no electricity.

According to Visionect, the city of Los Angeles spends over $9 million on temporary parking signs annually—money that could be saved by using the e-paper sign technology.
