A new sensor able to more accurately track what a person eats could help both individuals and their doctors better monitor diet and nutrient intake.
Currently, the main method of monitoring a person's diet is through self-reporting—which is not always reliable. To help take some of the human error out of the process, Dr. Edward Sazonov of the University of Alabama has created the Automatic Ingestion Monitor (AIM), an ear-worn device able to take a photo of the food being consumed and detect the motion of jaw as the food is chewed. The device can tell the difference between the jaw movements of eating and those of talking, and the estimated energy intake would be gathered by identifying the photo of the food or drink.
It is estimated almost two-thirds of the U.S. population are clinically overweight. Researchers believe that by making it easier for eaters be more aware of the calories they are consuming, that number could be reduced.
