Early Warning Implant Grows a Mole to Warn of Cancer

Early Warning Implant Grows a Mole to Warn of Cancer
Apr-22-18
An innovative early warning system for cancer will grow an artificial mole on the skin in the presence of elevated calcium levels.

Developed by a team at ETH Zurich, the prototype warning system relies on a genetic network integrated into human body cells and then inserted into an implant placed under the skin. If the blood calcium level reaches a predetermined threshold for a certain period, the genetically modified cells will cause a visible brown mole to form on the skin. The implant can monitor for four different kinds of cancer, offering an early warning system much earlier than is possible with traditional diagnosis.
