EasyJet is soon to begin testing a hybrid hydrogen fuel system that would save fuel by recovering the energy generated when a plane lands and brakes.
Based on a concept developed by students at Cranfield University, the system would function a bit like the regenerative braking systems on cars. The energy created and captured by the plane as it brakes would be stored in hydrogen fuel cell, where it could be called upon as needed, and the waste water created by the system could be used in the plane’s water system.
According to the company, the recovered energy could offset fuel consumption used during taxiing by up to four percent.
