Electric Shark Pod Deters Sharks with an Electronic Punch

Electric Shark Pod Deters Sharks with an Electronic Punch
Nov-13-14
An electric barrier that 'punches sharks in the nose' could make waters a bit safer for swimmers and surfers.

Many water-goers are familiar with the adage that you can punch a shark in the nose to scare it away. To help keep folks from having to go so far, a team in South Africa created a high-tech version that delivers an electric punch. The shark pod, as it is called, is made up of a 328-foot cable equipped with vertical risers that emit a low-frequency electronic field. The field is not large enough to harm humans or marine life, but it has proven to turn sharks away (researchers have found that this increased aversion is due to a gel in the shark's nose that makes it more sensitive to electric currents).

The shark pod is now undergoing testing off Glencairn beach, where the relatively calm waters are friendlier to the design.
