Electrical Stimulation Eases Seizures

Electrical Stimulation Eases Seizures
Sep-24-16
Researchers at the Mayo Clinic have demonstrated that applying continuous electrical stimulation to the brain can reduce seizures.

The new procedure, which could offer some relief for epileptic patients, works via an electrode grid that is applied to the brain. The grid, which is similar to the one used to locate the source of seizures, sends an electric current to the brain that lessens the frequency and intensity of the seizures. In tests, the system was able to alleviate the symptoms of drug-resistant epilepsy patients for whom surgery was not an option.

The Mayo team will continue with their clinical trials to determine the side effects and other long-term effects of the procedure.
