Rescue dogs may soon be out of a job with the development of an electronic nose that can sniff out victims trapped in disaster debris.
In order for the scientists to determine which molecules would be detectable, volunteers spent six hours in confined spaces passing their breath through tubes filled with different types of rubble. The device was able to detect acetone, ammonia, carbon dioxide and isoprene, and could locate 'buried' victims within an hour after burial.
The team now hopes to do tests that take into account the way the chemicals could change as the victim goes without food as well the chemicals in urine.
