Energy Generating Bacteria

Energy Generating Bacteria
May-17-12
Researchers have developed a way to convert bacteria to energy with the press of finger, which could lead to a new generation of paper-thin generators.

The specially engineered viruses were created by manipulating the genes of M13 viruses to add four negatively charged molecules to the outer surface. This increased the voltage the viruses are able to emit and allowed the scientists to create a generator able to produce about a quarter the voltage of an AAA battery when pressed. The viruses also self-arrange into the energy generating film, which can be stacked to into layers to create the most powerful piezoelectric effect.

The high-voltage viruses could eventually lead to the development of tiny devices able to harness energy from everyday motions.
