Expandable Emergency Bridge

Expandable Emergency Bridge
Jul-25-15
An expandable bridge inspired by origami can extend over rivers and canyons quickly, offering a solution to transportation difficulties in post-disaster or remote areas.

Created by a team from Hiroshima University, the Mobile Bridge Version 4.0 (MB4.0) is being touted as "the world’s fastest, largest, strongest, and lightest expanding temporary bridge." The bridge’s unique scissor-like structure allows it to contract for travel (it can be towed on a trailer) and then expand quickly once on location, with no need for a foundation or crane operations. The bridge can be expanded fully in about an hour, and is able to handle traffic as soon as its setup is complete—making it a valuable resource during emergencies.
