Extensor Hands Give Divers a Soft Touch

Extensor Hands Give Divers a Soft Touch
Sep-10-14
The Extensor robotic hand gives deep-sea divers a more delicate touch, enabling them to manipulate small or fragile objects more smoothly.

The extreme pressure at great depths requires that divers rely on sturdy, but clumsy, prehensors rather than their hands—which makes most jobs more difficult and some even impossible. To provide divers will more dexterity, Vishwa Robotics created a deep-sea robotic hand able to withstand the ocean environment. Neither an exoskeleton nor a prosthetic—though similar to both—the hand is operated by a glove-like controller that provides the user with force-feedback, allowing for precise pressure application.

The Extensors could have applications in underwater construction and salvage as well as marine archaeology, where it could be used to inspect fragile creatures and objects on the sea floor.
