Researchers have discovered a naturally occurring molecule that can shrink cataracts when administered as eye drops—offering a more easily accessible alternative to surgery.
The molecule, called lanosterol, was revealed to have an effect on cataract development when a team at China's Sun Yat-sen University noticed that two children with cataracts both had the same low production of lanosterol. From this revelation, the team learned that lanosterol helps keep the proteins that cause cataracts from clumping together.
When eye drops containing lanosterol were administered to dogs with naturally occurring cataracts, both the size and cloudiness of the cataracts diminished over a six-week period.
