EyeGate System Delivers Drugs Via Electricity

EyeGate System Delivers Drugs Via Electricity
Apr-16-18
The EyeGate II system from EyeGate Pharma delivers drugs to the eye noninvasively via an electric current.

Instead of needles, which can be disturbing to the patient, the EyeGate II iontophoresis drug delivery system relies on an electrode placed on the patient’s forehead and an opposite electrode in the applicator containing the medicine, which is placed against the eye. When a very small amount of current is applied between the electrodes, the ionized drug liquid is pulled into the eye. According to the team, putting on the device is similar to wearing a contact lens, with the treatment time requiring about seven minutes to complete.
