An extremely fast and affordable defrosting method inspired by glaciers clears ice quickly from windshields and airplane wings.
The method created by a team from the University of Illinois and Kyushu University relies on a thin film coating of indium-tin oxide (ITO) that can be heated with an electric current, melting the lower layer of the ice so the rest slides off. Although ITO is already in use for defrosting, the current versions take some time to heat up enough for the ice to slip away. Improving on this technology, the teams realized that short pulses of a very high current applied to the material will cause it to warm more quickly, while also requiring less energy.
