Fighting Bacteria with Maple Syrup

Fighting Bacteria with Maple Syrup
Apr-19-15
Fighting superbugs just got a bit sweeter with the discovery that maple syrup extract can increase an antibiotic's bacteria-fighting ability.

A team at McGill University in Canada created a concentrated extract of maple syrup made up primarily of phenolic compounds. Exposing bacteria to the extract damages the bacteria's protective membrane as well as its internal pumps that push antibodies away, which allows the antibodies to slip through more easily. The team also discovered that the maple syrup extract can destroy bacteria biofilm.

The technology is still undergoing testing, but the team is hopeful that the extract could be incorporated into antibiotic capsules to help reduce dosage amounts.
