First Fully-Implantable Fetal Pacemaker

First Fully-Implantable Fetal Pacemaker
Mar-30-15
Researchers have developed a pacemaker small enough to be completely implanted into a fetus, offering a more effective—and comfortable—alternative to conventional options.

Previously, the only treatment for fetuses suffering from complete heart block relied on pacemakers designed for adults and powered by external leads. The new pacemaker, developed by teams from the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and the University of Southern California, is built based upon the teams' experience building biomedical devices using "microfabrication techniques," and is small enough to be implanted entirely within the fetus—power source and all.

The pacemaker will soon begin undergoing human trials.
