Fly-Bag Membrane Contains Cargo Hold Explosions

Fly-Bag Membrane Contains Cargo Hold Explosions
Jul-29-15
Developed for use in aircraft luggage holds, the Fly-Bag can contain an explosive blast and prevent the rest of the plane from being destroyed.

While there are provisions in place to help contain an explosion in a plane’s luggage hold, these technologies rely on rigid materials that add weight to the plane and can also become shrapnel during an explosion.

As an alternative, an international consortium has developed the Fly-Bag, a light, flexible material made up of layers of composites able to withstand both the force and heat of a bomb blast. According to Andy Tyas, one of the lead researchers, the flexible membrane of the Fly-Bag is key to the design’s concept, because it allows the bag to contain the blast without shattering and creating shrapnel. According to reports, tests using the bag have been “extremely promising.”
