Freedom Driver Gives Unprecedented Mobility to Artificial Heart Patients

Freedom Driver Gives Unprecedented Mobility to Artificial Heart Patients
Jul-22-14
Artificial heart patients awaiting transplant have been given a new degree of mobility thanks to the Freedom portable driver, which can be used with all SynCardia artificial hearts.

Artificial hearts demand a steady supply of clean power to operate, forcing most patients to remain in the hospital and connected to a special unit until a donor heart becomes available. SynCardia developed the Freedom driver, which was recently cleared by the FDA, to provide these patients with greater mobility. In contrast to current drivers, which will not even fit in a car's trunk, the Freedom driver weighs only 13.5 lbs and can be carried in a backpack. The device's batteries are hot-swappable, and they can be charged from either a wall outlet or a car's cigarette lighter port.
