Researchers have developed a vaccine kit that could make it easy for doctors and clinics to create medicines in the field.
Developed by a team from Harvard’s Wyss Institute, the key to the portable vaccine kit is the freeze-dried molecules that can be rehydrated with water to create different vaccines. The "portable biomolecular manufacturing" approach, as it is called, could be used to create a wide array of vaccines that can also be administered in different ways, such as orally or topically.
The vaccine kit has already been used to synthesize a vaccine for diphtheria in mice, and the team envisions it ultimately being used to create vaccines or medicines to treat outbreaks on the spot.
