Gentler Robot Can Reach Past Clutter

Gentler Robot Can Reach Past Clutter
May-02-13
An artificial skin designed for robots gives them increased sensitivity, allowing them to gently choose an object among clutter or tuck us in bed without crushing us.

Developed by a team from the Georgia Institute of Technology, the sensor-embedded skin covers the entire arm, which gives the robot increased sensitivity. By combining the new ‘skin’ with computer vision, the robot is able to reach into a cluttered environment without knocking objects over. Previously, robots have been limited it their ability to select objects because they are programmed specifically not to touch anything except the target object. The new skin and vision combination allows robots to touch other objects as they make their selection, as long as the forces are low.

According to the developers, the ability to gently select and move objects is vital if robots are to be allowed into our homes.
