A new glass material called vanadate-borate glass could lead to lithium-ion batteries able to tackle the projected demands of future electrical devices.
Researchers have known that vanadium-based compounds can hold higher capacities than conventional materials, but the material will become unstable after only a few cycles. To address the problem, the team at ETH Zurich decided to use vanadium as a glass instead of in its crystalline form. To that end, they created the glass by mixing powered vanadium pentoxide with borate compounds—resulting in the vanadate-borate glass. Not only is the material stable with a high capacity, it is also relatively easy and inexpensive to make.
