A protective bracelet for members of civil rights groups uses GPS technology and social media to track and protect activists from attacks.
Created by Sweden’s Civil Rights Defenders, the Natalia Project bracelet was inspired by, and named for, Natalia Estemirova, a civil rights activist who was kidnapped and murdered in 2009. If the bracelet wearer is assaulted or abducted, the bracelet will send a Facebook or Twitter alert to participating members (who do not have to be civil rights activists themselves) with information about the exact time and location of the attack. Removing the bracelet by force will also trigger the alarm.
