Groundbreaking Propulsion-Free Spacecraft

Groundbreaking Propulsion-Free Spacecraft
Aug-05-14
NASA has recently confirmed what may be a groundbreaker in space propulsion—the development of a spacecraft that can generate thrust without propellant.

As explained by the drive's creator, Guido Fetta, the "Cannae Drive" functions as a resonating chamber for microwave radiation. Bouncing the microwaves in the closed chamber causes an unbalanced force that can be used to produce a small amount of thrust no more than 50 micro-Newtons—enough to lift a couple of eyelashes. NASA did not go into detail as to how the device actually works, but did confirm its success in creating thrust.

Other researchers have also been working on propellant-free thrusters for some years, such as the EmDrive created by British scientist Roger Shawyer. This technology was recently replicated by a Chinese team, but their success attracted little attention in the West.
