Harpoon TSD-5 Replaced Open-Heart Surgery

Harpoon TSD-5 Replaced Open-Heart Surgery
Jul-20-16
The Harpoon TSD-5 offers a less-invasive method to repair the heart, and can even be used on a heart that is still beating.

Developed by a team from the University of Maryland Medical Center, the Harpoon TSD-5 is designed to treat the common heart valve disorder degenerative mitral regurgitation. This condition is caused by broken or stretched cords that cause the blood to flow in the wrong direction, and normally requires invasive open-heart surgery to repair.

As an alternative to surgery, the Harpoon can be inserted into the heart via a small puncture in the ribcage, and then guided to the damaged area via echocardiographic imaging. The artificial cord can be installed through the flap while the heart is still beating, and can also be adjusted for the ideal length.
