A small power plant in Hawaii has turned to OTEC technology to harness the energy stored in the ocean.
Ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) takes advantage of the temperature difference between the warm surface of the ocean and deeper, cooler water to generate electricity. At the Makai plant, this is accomplished by using the warm water at the ocean’s surface to heat the outside of a container filled with ammonia. The ammonia, which has a low boiling point, vaporizes to drive a turbine, then travels back through a pipe cooled by colder, deeper water. The cold water re-liquifies the ammonia, allowing the process to repeat.
