A team of bioengineers and surgeons from Rice University and Baylor College of Medicine have developed a biomaterial that has stem cells in it, that helps repair heart tissue damage that occurs after a heart attack.
For the body to accept this biomaterial, they coated it with a brown algae-based biocompatible hydrogel. The body doesn't see this hydrogel as a threat, and doesn't try to fight it. Next, the material was tested on rodents, showing that those who had the hydrogel coated cells healed 2.5 times better than those who didn't.
this new biomaterial could reverse the effects of a heart attack, and other heart problems, by helping people heal completely, and get rid of the physical restrictions that can occur.
