Holographic Microscope Diagnoses Asthma from a Blood Sample

Holographic Microscope Diagnoses Asthma from a Blood Sample
Dec-04-19
A holographic microscope can quickly diagnose asthma in small children with just a simple blood test.

Typical tests for asthma include blowing into a device to test lung function, which are not appropriate for young children. To offer a more effective tool, the holographic microscope developed by Fraunhofer relies on a single drop of blood placed in a microfluidic cartridge. An inflammatory stimulus is added to the sample, triggering a response from the white blood cells that is analyzed using AI. By comparing the cell movement to that of healthy cells, the system can detect asthma in just 90 minutes, and the method could be used to diagnose other diseases as well.
