Honey Mesh Helps Internal Wounds Heal

Honey Mesh Helps Internal Wounds Heal
Dec-05-19
Nanolayers of manuka honey arranged on surgical mesh could fight infection to help internal wounds heal.

Although long known for its bacteria-fighting properties, manuka honey has typically been applied to external wounds. Now, a team from Newcastle University has developed a way to use the honey to promote soft tissue repair inside the body. The team created an electrospun nano-coating for surgical meshes that will slow release medical-grade Manuka honey. As the layers of polymer between the honey dissolve harmlessly in the body, the honey layers are exposed to any bacteria that may try to infect the mesh.

In tests, the honey mesh was able to resist bacteria colonization for up to three weeks.
