An innovative wearable control system could allow humanoid robots to move with the dexterity and balance of humans.
The system was developed by a team from MIT and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign for use with the two-legged HERMES robot to increase its mobility by overcoming the common hurdle facing bipedal robots: balancing. To that end, the team created a vest worn by the operator that allows the robot to move in sync while also delivering haptic feedback in near real-time. This allows the human operator to sense when the robot is falling off balance and adjust fast enough to right the drone before it can topple over.
