Hybrid Antibiotic Breaks Through Biofilms

Hybrid Antibiotic Breaks Through Biofilms
Dec-03-19
A hybrid antibiotic able to break through biofilms offers a new way to fight staph infections and bacterial resistance.

Biofilms can build up on medical devices and wounds over time, making the bacteria much harder to kill and leading to repeat infections. To fight these films, researchers from the Queensland University of Technology created a “new breed” of antibiotic made from combining the commonly used ciprofloxacin with nitroxides. According to the team, the nitroxides will cause the biofilms to break apart and allow the ciprofloxacin access to the bacterial cells.
