Hybrid Solar Plant

Hybrid Solar Plant

(7)Mar-14-11
Florida's new solar energy plant works together with a natural gas power plant to create electricity, creating the world's first hybrid solar energy plant.

The Martin Next Generation Solar Energy Center, located in Martin County on FPL owned land, consists of over 190,000 solar thermal mirrors which use hydraulic motors to track the sun. The energy provided by the solar panels is converted into electricity and used to offset the natural gas usage. The facility has created over 1000 jobs and expects to reduce fossil fuel consumption by 41 billion cubic feet of natural gas and over 600,000 barrels of oil.

There are other dual energy hybrid plants, but most of them work by burning oil in conjunction with solar collection.
