Hydrogel Offers Rheumatoid Arthritis Treatment

Hydrogel Offers Rheumatoid Arthritis Treatment
Oct-19-17
A hydrogel able to release drugs in the presence of nitric oxide could offer new treatment possibilities for rheumatoid arthritis and other diseases.

One characteristic of rheumatoid arthritis is that the immune cells in the inflamed joints will release large quantities of nitric oxide. With this in mind, the new hydrogel, from a team at the Institute for Basic Science, was developed to respond to the presence of nitric oxide by expanding and absorbing the gas. As the gel expands, it can also be programmed to release its cargo of drugs, with the amount releases proportional to its intake of nitric oxide.
