Implanted Chip Offers Constant Monitoring

Implanted Chip Offers Constant Monitoring
May-31-15
An implantable, wireless chip able to monitor molecular concentration could offer a way to perform lab-quality tests of an individual’s blood in real time.

Created by a team at EPFL, the tiny, implanted chip is powered via an internal induction coil and an external battery in a patch on the surface on the skin. Once in place, the chip will track the concentration of specific molecules, such a cholesterol, glucose and medications. The information is transmitted to a smartphone—providing real time analysis—and the chip can remain in place and functioning for up to several weeks.
