Inflatable Graspers Give Robots a Soft Touch

Inflatable Graspers Give Robots a Soft Touch
Oct-01-15
In an effort to give robots a more delicate touch, Disney Research scientists have created inflatable graspers able to handle fragile objects safely.

The graspers are made up of a pair of 3D-printed, soft cylindrical modules that fit tightly over a set of robotic graspers and are inflated like balloons. As the graspers pick up an object, the air pressure inside the modules changes, which is detected by built-in sensors. This allows the system to monitor how much pressure the graspers are exerting and adjust the force accordingly.
