Infrared Curtain Offers an Affordable Multi-Touch Alternative

Infrared Curtain Offers an Affordable Multi-Touch Alternative
Dec-20-14
An "infrared curtain" system from Continental could bring multi-touch touchscreen controls to economy cars.

The system is made up of an LCD screen surrounded by a frame with infrared-emitting LEDs along two adjacent sides and photodiodes along the other two. When the user touches the LCD screen, their fingers interrupt some of the infrared light beams, which in turn blocks the light to the photodiodes and allows the system to determine the location of the user's finger in real-time. The addition of two rows of LEDs (instead of only one) allows the system to recognize multi-touch gestures like pinching or swiping. And as an added bonus, the system can also be used with non-capacitive gloves.
